As I recall setuid bit might be interfering with some environment variables
which sapwood is relying on. Could you try starting your privileged application
with sudo rather than relying on setuid bit? That is more or less the standard
way to get privileges on the system anyway.

Server listens to (an abstract) unix socket in "$TMPDIR/sapwood-$DISPLAY"
(g_get_tmp_dir() and gdk_display_get_name ()) so changes to environment
variables could be causing some issues.
