We were more concerned about making the common case fast enough than worrying
about corner cases. (I think there's been 2-3 instances out of 100+ apps.)

I'm sorry, but I forgot what was the call dia was doing initially to trigger
this behavior (gtk_widget_set_default_colormap (gdk_rgb_get_colormap ()) ?)  In
our case that is a bad call to make if the assumption is that it improves
performance whereas instead it disables the optimizations in the theme engine.

I'd like to understand the circumstances better before doing any drastic
changes. Like I said, if the purpose is to improve performance, patching the
theme engine defeats the purpose.
