gnome_vfs_uri_new needs an escaped string as well. I did try to escape this 
problematic part, using %num, didn't help. IIRC this kept on stripping one 
slash on the url.
And so did gnome_vfs_make_uri_from_input(), which suppose to escape the url. 
But looked more like 'correcting' user typo's
