So you say it is better to let people discover this flaw the hard way,
i.e. by debugging the BadMatch? Sorry I dont follow. 
IMO the basic principle should be: first make it correct, than make it fast. 
The latter may be optional if there is a better way to avoid the slow code path
- as outlined above (changing gtk's default depth.
