In the latest releases it's possible to run maemo-launcher processes like this:
  run-standalone.sh /usr/bin/maemo-summoner /usr/bin/maemo_af_desktop.launch
This might show a bit more output.

Note: To be able to stop and start desktop from a terminal without causing
device reboot, you need to disable device lifeguard first (explained on Maemo 
Wiki).
