Depending on OS version, we had some more and less ugly hacks that could explain
this behavior. Basically it was enforced that the first row on the list gets
selected when it is inserted (and the focus is grabbed to the treeview.)

With stock gtk (and maemo gtk 2.10) when the focus is moved to the treeview (or
the treeview is already focused and new row is inserted) because of the way
keyboard navigation works, one item needs to get selected.
