It is indeed a problem with checkbox mode being on by default, which is a pretty bad idea, as 
mentioned here: https://maemo.org/bugzilla/long_list.cgi?buglist=298

The problem here is that Nokia has deviated from GTK in a way that is brittle.  Rather than create a 
special subclass of TreeView which does Nokia-specific mechanisms, TreeView itself has been 
modified, creating behavior different than that expected in GTK documentation, and desired by existing 
GTK-based libraries and applications.  This makes porting a headache and also causes long, annoyed 
evenings by developers like myself scratching our heads about a mysterious change to GTK's Treeview 
with no explanation except in unrelated documentation hidden away somewhere.

All this stuff should be eliminated.  From your comment, I infer that you have done this already in 
Sardine; when will this be migrated to the N800?  If I inferred incorrectly, please let me know as I'd like 
to reopen this bug to make this request.
