I guess the browser sends some request to the mail client. But I absolutely don't know. I hardly use the mail client. I once set it up to work on my imap account and never started it again after that. So the mail GUI is not started when this happens. I have an imap account with about 3000 mails in the main inbox and several sub-boxes with about 15000 mails.
