In this case the unit screen should still be lit for a second or two when
you press the power button.

Have you left e.g. some browser page open with flash or javascript
animations or animated images?

What 3rd party applications, applets or other packages you've installed?
If you start Utilities -> X terminal and then "top", does it show something
else than "top", X terminal (single "maemo-launcher" process) and "Xomap"
taking CPU?

It taking wwhole day to drain battery would indicate that something is not
using CPU that much, just waking too often.
