Proposed Patch

This patch will remove the gtk_widget_show_all()

*** WARNING *** when this patch gets applied; application developers will be
forced to manage the menu item visibility on their own; this might be a really
incompatible change of behavior.

So, do we want to include this patch at some point? (If so, when?) Or do we
want to fix this bug by providing a second function to set the menu and
deprecate the current one?
