There is no additional software that should be doing that (I put a few dev
tools on it but nothing that should be constantly on).

It would make perfect sense if with the charger attached it stayed lit up and
without the charger it faded to black, but strangely there does not seem to be
a correlation.

But yes, it's certainly odd that it powers off so quickly all by itself.  If I
could turn it on, I'd reflash it with 51-3 and no software at all and test it
like that for a day or two.

Originally, it did report that it was charging, then that it was fully charged.
 Interestingly, the last time it did that was also the last time I was able to
turn it on.  Since then, when I connect the charger nothing happens.  If I then
press the on button, it lights up with 'Nokia' but gets no further.

Also, if I turn it on connected to a PC via the USB cable, the USB logo does
not seem to appear in the corner of the screen.

Perhaps this is not the 'power up drama' but a physically defective unit?  If I
think it's 'power up drama' then I'll persevere with it, if not Amazon can have
it back :)
