I have encountered similar problem.

My brand new N800 turns on, I play with it, turn it off normally by holding the
shut down button. Wait a few seconds, try to turn it back on and it refuses.
Wait 1 day, try to turn it back on and it worked!

I opted for an exchange for a second N800 and the SAME thing happened. 
Phoned Nokia, they say it's a software issue and needs to be sent to the
factory for repairs!

Currently I don't know of any other solution but to wait 1 day for my device to
turn on again...
