Added list of my packages - "non-standard" as in "not part of the original OS";
some are even "non-Diablo" as in "Chinook" (such as Pimlico Contacts).
I'm not really sure how this helps as I experience this annoying bug when
typing on the virtual keyboard, which I guess is as "standard Diablo" as can
be. The applications I use most (when typing) are microB and modest, and I do
get the ghost taps there.
In case I didn't mention: N800, not N810. Oh, yes, and when I say virtual
keyboard, it's the small stylus-variant. I never use the thumb keyboard.

My Diablo is actually Chinook installed on SD card, then SSUed to Diablo then
to the two updates. I have tons of packages since i didn't reinstall for 9
months maybe. So you should trust the other bug reports more, mine is not
reliable if it gets down to packages and clean install...
I have clean install but i don't use it enough to notice the bug.

OK, so explicitly calling gtk.set_application_name("") fixes this...
Sounds like it's not a Maemo bug anymore then?
Is this clear enough in the python api definition/how-to's?
If not, feel free to file a ticket:
As Python is not officially supported in Maemo at the moment, it's not tracked
in Maemo Bugzilla.

TN implementations (already in 770) have been tightly bound to the concept of
Desktop file objects (which contain translated app names, D-BUS services names,
icons etc), windows are just mapped to these (using WMCLASS property).
Changing this will require major changes i.e. this will not happen in Diablo,
but hopefully in Fremantle.

I haven't used it, but it's easy to check, just ssh to the device and strace
hildon-desktop (the process using more memory, the smaller one is
maemo-invoker).

Yes.
The card contents may also affect how long it's used, but "lsof" and "top"
should tell it though.

Unless the device is in offline mode, applications needing network will
activate it automatically to do their updates. There can be quite a few things
doing that in computers nowadays: IM, E-mail, RSS etc...

Input passing through system modal dialog and changing banner position (code
bugs) are completely different issues from "All button and touchscreen presses
ignored until screen lock pattern is repeated" enhancement request (UI spec
issue and IMHO also very annoying).
> > Btw. If you set the dim & blank period to the same value,

Timeouts, not behavior. (personally I think dimming is just annoying, you then
need to tap to the screen to see what's on it which results often in tapping
accidentally some link in browser. Then you need to stop the page load, tap
back and wait until the page you were reading reloads...)

Anyway I'm not sure that the problem comes from the bad wifi disconnection.

When I don't use the tablet, they don't (well, at least the applications I
use). So, that's not the problem.
But if the UI is changed to that offline mode can be used as easily as
disconnect (in particular, when the hotspot can no longer be reached), then I
could use that as well.

Sorry, what's hard in offline-mode use?
Disconnect is: tap to statusbar + tap to disconnect.
Offline is: press power, double-tap offline option.
(In both you may need to tap also OK if there's an active connection.)

I didn't know that one could double-tap. So, at best, this is a bit equivalent.
But:
1. When the tablet is on the table with the keyboard slid out, it is faster to
do a disconnect: one can do this without having to take the tablet to reach the
power button (note: tapping the statusbar doesn't work here: it has no effect).
2. Sometimes I leave home (or the current place) with my N810 without
disconnecting first (since it disconnects automatically once the wifi hotspot
is not longer visible, it isn't necessary to do anything). In this case, there
should be an option to go to offline mode instead of just a disconnection.

to clarify for Andre:
yes the problem exists out of the boot lock window. as per the rest of my
post, not only do the numbers no work, but any function key combination yields
no output in the various programs I listed. There are others, but I confirmed
those I listed before making the post. Seems this odd right after flashing the
new OS.

I wonder if this bug is also at the root of the text-selection bug in MicroB,
where you go to pan the page and instead of the page scrolling as you drag you
end up selecting masses of text. I find it almost impossible sometimes to drag
the page in MicroB, my only partial solution is to click outside of the MicroB
application and then sometimes I am able to drag scroll. It's as if MicroB does
not see the "mouse up" event when I start to drag the page, which might also
explain why the scrollbar scrolls forever.

ask Richard to explain precisely which line in the cited code is buggy (by
citing API documentation indicating what should be done in response to a given
return value). That code (plus a sufficiently large number of open file
handles) is sufficient to create such a loop. If necessary I'm sure we could
write such a program.

Please provide a full self contained test case then that shows the issue then,
not just a snippet, including what kind of input is used to reproduce (like the
URIs and how the filesystem looks, i.e. symlinks, "weird" filenames/paths with
characters that could trigger any escaping bugs, etc).

This is only partially fixed.
What is and will NOT be fixed (hence WONTFIX, according to Nokia) is this
testcase:
"1. Open new browser window.
2. Focus on google search string.
3. Switch layout.
Switching from Russian layout to English works as expected.
Switching from English layout to Russian doesn't work properly:
Press ctrl-chr and immediately begin typing - Keyboard layout is still English
and doesn't switch.
Press ctrl-chr, wait until banner hides and just then begin typing - Keyboard
layout is Russian.
So, user should wait until banner hides. Back switching to English works
immediately."

------- Comment #14 from maemo at subs.maneos.org 2008-11-12 20:05 GMT+3 -------
That's very disappointing to hear :-(
Just to make the scope of this bug clear, it's not confined to browser entry
fields and Russian but it affects physical keyboard input system-wide, with any
language (cf bug 2501).
FWIW the on-device help on 4.2008.36-5 still advertises physical keyboard input
language switching as working, supported functionality (Text input methods >
Integrated keyboard):
> The integrated keyboard can vary depending on the device sales region, but
> the keyboard can still provide two different text input languages at the
> same time. To switch between two keyboard layouts, press Chr and Ctrl
> simultaneously.
This has never worked with any firmware/update version released so far.
What is the scope of the WONTFIX resolution? Does it mean Nokia won't fix
language switching in Diablo/N810 or will this also remain broken in Fremantle
and future devices?
Finally, is this something the community help with? Is the source of the
relevant bits open and if so can we have some pointers to the appropriate
places and a brief description of what the blocker issues are?

No, there is only one PC involved.
But 4 of my shared folders are partitions on my PC its hard disc, and the empty
folders on the N810 are, as far as I can remember, always one of these shared
partitions. I will try one of these days to add several shared folders (so not
partitions) and see how the N810 handle these additional folders.

SOFTWARE VERSION:

4.2008.36-5
STEPS TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM:
I haven't noticed any correlation between the problem, and what I'm doing, per
se. However, it occurs when I am typing, and the CPU usage spikes, such as
(theoretical example) launching a heavyweight app in the background.
EXPECTED OUTCOME:
Typed text should appear as entered, albeit with some delay
ACTUAL OUTCOME:
Sometimes (not always), when the text doesn't appear immediately, it eventually
appears in reverse order when it does. e.g., I type "foobar1234", and the CPU
applet shows a spike in the middle of the word, I get "foo4321rab". This
happens across diverse apps, and intermittently. I know that isn't much to go
on, so I'll log any future occurrences, and post the details here.
REPRODUCIBILITY:
(always/sometimes/once)
occasionally, but always under similar circumstances

This is a bit vague, you don't even tell us in which application this happens.
A good way to reproduce this would be very helpful.

Yes, it is still the issue (I've just checked, and there's not
auto-capitalisation at the first try). However it seems like correct/incorrect
behavious is random. Well, it's probably not random, but I don't know what
exactly causes this issue. :(

Jarmo, this is still an issue with Diablo I assume?
There are lots of bugs especially about iGo keyboards in this Bugzilla, and I
don't expect many improvements as this is not a high priority for Nokia.
Can you provide the exact firmware version/model?

Summary: maemo-launcher build-depends on libhildondesktop-dev,
which in turn build-depends on maemo-launcher-dev
Product: System software
Version: unspecified
Platform: All
OS/Version: Ubuntu
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: Low
Component: maemo-launcher
AssignedTo: guillem.jover at nokia.com
ReportedBy: carsten.munk at gmail.com
QAContact: maemo-launcher-bugs at maemo.bugs
SOFTWARE VERSION:
Using trunk versions from https://stage.maemo.org/svn/maemo/projects/haf/trunk/
We are a small bunch of people from community trying to "reconstruct" Maemo
(see proposal at http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_Reconstructed, ), and we are
attempting a sort of proof of concept of this proposal. In this PoC we take
most published parts of Maemo and try to refit them onto a up-to-date
Debian/Ubuntu base to see what problems arise - also to help fix problems with
porting Debian/Ubuntu applications to the Maemo platform.
As part of this work, we're reporting this bug to help improve Maemo and the
portability of the Maemo platform.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM:
dpkg-buildpackage'ing hildon-desktop
dpkg-buildpackage'ing maemo-launcher
EXPECTED OUTCOME:
Being able to compile each of these packages from bootstrap
ACTUAL OUTCOME:
maemo-launcher build-depends on libhildondesktop-dev, which in turn
build-depends on maemo-launcher-dev.
REPRODUCIBILITY:
Always.
EXTRA SOFTWARE INSTALLED:
Not applicable.
OTHER COMMENTS:
WORKAROUND:
in hildon-desktop:
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nolauncher dpkg-buildpackage
dpkg -i built packages
in maemo-launcher:
dpkg-buildpackage
and then in hildon-desktop again:
dpkg-buildpackage.

2nd Language selection box is inactive, as well as Settings button for it. 1st
language is English and it has auto-capitalisation enabled.
I have ukeyboard package installed in order to get Polish characters on
hardware keyboard. Could that be a potential source of the issue?

I'm sorry - I realize it's vague, but the problem is intermittent and random.
It doesn't seem to discriminate between apps, though. As I said, I'll keep
track of the context when it happens again, and try to come up with a
reproduceable situation.

itkach, can you provide an example when the current behaviour is definitely

You may want to follow the links to discussion on Maemo Garage from my original
post. "Very good reasons" I refer to are discussed at
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344874.
Think about it for a moment: unsuspecting user scrolls to the middle of a long
text, toggles full screen mode on, then goes back - the text he was reading is
no longer visible, text view scrolled to the end, because this is where cursor
was, although it is not visible. This is extremely annoying. Install SDict
Viewer to experience first-hand how disruptive and broken this is. Please fix
it.

Though I'm very bad in reading and understanding low-level code, I have the
vague feeling that this commit might be related:
http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gtk%2B?view=revision&revision=14867
Upstream bug is http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324562 .
Patch is included in gtk+ 2.8.x and later.
Writing this into the void as Rodrigo does not have time to read bugmail and
Tommi has left Nokia.

I don't understand what you two are talking about, it works fine for me since
last update.
Andre, your testcase works fine for me. I can press Ctrl+Chr and then start
typing immediately, and the switch always happens as expected, no matter of the
switch direction.
Lucas, "This has never worked with any firmware/update version released so
far", this is wrong, it always worked for me, just that it had problems with
Mozilla which are fixed now.

Interesting. Here it has never worked, on either of two N810s with the

I don't understand what you're expecting to happen when you choose the English
keyboard setting. Mine is Russian-Latin and that's exactly the languages it
switches between.
My guess is that if you switch language to Russian you'll be able to switch
between Cyrillic and Latin glyphs just like me. However, I don't quite
understand what you are expecting to happen when you choose the English
language setting.

$OSSO_PRODUCT_KEYBOARD actually refers to the physical keyboard variant, not to
the input method configuration settings. I do have two languages set there.
As I reported in bug 2501 my settings and goal is to have dual English and
Greek layouts, but even if I set both languages to eg Russian the keyboard only
produces latin characters in QWERTY layout.
It *sounds* like a software bug, but I'm starting to worry that it may be a
manufacturing defect in early units. Does keyboard layout switching work for
anyone with a hw-build 0801 device?
Andre/Karsten: since it seems that this wasn't a duplicate of bug 2501 after
all, could you find out if that is also WONTFIX and reopen/adjust resolution
accordingly?

WONTFIX in downstream Maemo.
One-liner workaround posted in comment 4.
If this gets fixed in upstream GNOME gtk+ *and* if Fremantle will ship a very
recent gtk+ version, this *might* become FIXED for Fremantle. Unlikely to me,

Hmm. Really need to know if this is still a valid issue in latest Diablo
(4.2008.36-5). I won't be able to convince Nokia developers to work on
pre-Chinook issues...
> it seems the workaround doesn't work on OS2008.
Any links, explanations, references?

Affected packages need fixing by adding:
gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor
or similar to their postrm scripts.
This is not a battery application or theme bug itself.

I seem to recall one of the events (editing-started?) didn't fire at all. I
spent about 3 days trying to find another workaround.
If you can't run the script in an xterm, send me another N800 with Diablo on it
and I'll test it out. I can't reformat my device because it's got too much
important stuff on it that I need constantly.

Its the maemo-launcher Hildon booster (/usr/lib/maemo-launcher/booster-gtk.so)
that requires dependency to libhildondesktop-dev. If it would be put to a
separate source package, build deps should work fine like this:
- libhildondesktop-dev -> maemo-launcher-dev
- maemo-launcher-hildon-booster -> libhildondesktop-dev, maemo-launcher-dev

I don't care - It's only interesting for me if it happens in the latest
version. If you don't run the latest version I will ask you to test first.
Reason: There won't be another update for 3.2, 4.0, 4.1 or 4.1.1. There will be
only an update available for 4.1.2 and it will be called 4.1.3.

In Diablo (4.1), curl (libcurl3) is not official part of the platform, hence
this bug is INVALID (at least nowadays).
Please contact the package maintainers if this is still an issue in Diablo.

I'm a bit lost here.
As this seems to be in the Desktop area and a non-critical issue (hence by
default a WONTFIX for Desktop as far as I understand), I'd really like to know
whether this still applies for Fremantle and whether it's worth to file an
internal ticket about this.
Comments appreciated (Andrey maybe?).

Just a note, cyclic Build-Depends are common in Debian, and that's one of
the first issue one stomps on when bootstrapping a new port for example,
but then they usually are not visible anymore. Of course those are desirable
to be fixed if feasible, but sometimes it's not. Consider pkg-config using
glib and glib needing pkg-config at build time, in that case pkg-config ships
an old snapshot of glib so that one can bootstrap it first.
(In reply to comment #3)

Yeah that'd be a possibility given the modular design of the launcher. Another
one would be to split the hildon-desktop from the library, and as I remember
there was already talk about that, maybe there's even an internal bug report.

It is true that it is a non-critical and trivial issue, but I don't agree that
because of this that it should be a WONTFIX.
It is an issue that will improve Hildon (and launcher) adaptation outside of
Maemo, and may help in case of developers internally/externally bootstrapping
Maemo from scratch or in case of people using launcher in other distributions.
But in reply to #5 (thanks for the informative comment), yes, it's reasonable
to have some kind of circular dependancy in some cases - and even if this bug
would be a WONTFIX, it is now documented so future bootstrappers will be aware
this issue exists and can work with it.

Heather: So you
1) lock the screen (Lock button? or the Power button and then choose from
menu?)
2) plug ear phones
3) click on the applications menu and it gets expanded?
Like in the video, you also get the "Move to unlock" popup displayed everytime
you click in the applications menu?
How often does this happen? 1 out of 5, 1 out of 20 times?
I think I've never seen this.
