We are moving to upstart and one of the reasons of the change is to improve
booting time. I don't know whether this is going to be 5 seconds but at least
we agree with you that the current marks need to improve.

Let me say though that booting in itself is not all for the end user, since you
need to take in consideration as well the time foor starting the app(s) desired
by the user. You can get less time in initial booting at the expense of making
the user wait more when starting an application, or you can make a trade off
and preload some services so the user gets instantil the app open after
booting. Note that the Maemo compatible devices are meant to be 'always on', as
opposed to PC/laptop usage where booting every morning is the usual routine for
most users. Products like the eeePC have much bigger issues of battery life and
this is why they probably keep the power off/on as a default case. In this
context booting time is more crucial.

BUT we try to make booting time as short as possible. Eero knows more about the
technical details and I'm sure the team he works with had a look to the news
you are pointing.
