STEPS TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM:
/usr/share $ ls -alR user-icons/
user-icons/:
drwxr-xr-x    3 root     root            0 Sep 11 16:36 .

drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root            0 Sep 11 16:35 default

/usr/share/user-icons
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           36 Jun 12 13:06 xcursor-transparent ->
/usr/share/icons/xcursor-transparent

user-icons/default:

As you can see here we have several linking loops and since /home/user/.icons
-> /usr/share/user-icons we have a situation where attempting to traverse the
home directory could easily end up in an endless loop.
