[maemo-community] Announcing results of logo contest

Hi all,

The judges have spent a lot of time over the past few days considering
the entries for the logo contest.

The standard was very high, and we had a tough time whittling down the
possibilities. A great number of good logos didn't make it to final
consideration.

After a long deliberation, taking into account comments from the mailing
list, and a long email discussion, followed by a final meeting in IRC,
we are ready to announce the winner.

First, we want to give a special mention to 3 logos which made our final
shortest of shortlists:
Peres 1: http://wiki.maemo.org/Image:Maemo.org_logo_contest_peres_1.png
Thiercito 8: (rounded variant)

Jussi 16: http://wiki.maemo.org/Image:Maemo.org_logo_contest_jussi_-014-.png

While Jussi had withdrawn this version of his logo from consideration in
favour of a later version, the judges took considerable creative licence
in considering older entries, and also suggesting variants such as the
rounded version of Thiercito's entry.

And finally, the winner of the logo contest is:
glaoliver 1:

What swung it for glaoliver in the end was a number of things, and of
course some subjectivity also.

We felt that the logo was modern in appearance, had great potential with
variants (looks great as plain colour), and represents a number of ideas
behing the maemo.org community. The joined letters suggest
collaboration, the open loop on the A suggesting openness, and the
infinity of the ae ligature suggesting continuity.

We've invited glaoliver to contact Nokia's marketing people to finalise
the logo and get some merchandising ready for the Maemo Summit, as well
as make some polishing touches to the logo.

Thank you all again for your magnificent work! As I said earlier to our
finalists, you made the judge's job very hard, which is the highest
compliment I can pay you all.

Cheers,
Dave.
