TBH, I prefer the direction of your first mockup. I very strongly
believe in an "information hierarchy" when creating a website - and
it's most important on the front page.

Here there's no clear weighting between the news, downloads and
community columns and so I'm forced to look at all of them to work out
what I want. It shows a lot of content up front, but I think it
exposes /too/ much.

(Yes, I realise my mockup did the same with its too many portlets -
but it did have the same as your previous mockup in terms of the large
icons to navigate someone away from the page to where they want to be
more specifically).

This large amount of dynamic content shows an active community, but
the immediate impression I get is of a chaotic and unfocused one :-)

I like the tagline for a homepage splash, but think it'd just add
clutter to the header if it was on every page.

It proves, once again, you're a much better designer & pretty picture
maker than me :-)
