Is this backed up by profiling, or is it intuitive?

Previously, it was "the hardware" - the hardware's changed now, if I
understand correctly?

So I'd be interested in hearing that some profiling has been done to
identify the bottleneck, rather than trying to interpret the output of
'top' or whatever.
