No, not exactly. It is good for more than ego boosting (which is good 
too). It gives interesting numbers about member activity. But due to its 
nature and the fuzziness of the output I think it is not suitable for 
drawing lines and excluding people from something based on the total 
karma number. I hope that even with such restriction on karma usage it 
can be useful hint.

Same lazy evaluation principle applies here :-) So far karma was not 
important so the problem could be ignored. Also the karma concept is not 
bad as such, only some specific usage can be and so far it was not used.

Good example, who are we to exclude several active community members 
with negative karma from voting? And there always will be someone worthy 
just below the line.
