Hmm.  I'm not sure I agree.  Certainly it would be useful if the only goal is 
to measure current fashion.  But I am not sure that is the only goal.  I 
thought the goal was to help people find apps and updates they are likely to 
be interested in?

If that is the case, updates to already very popular apps are always of 
interest.  So, any update to an app which is already popular should give it 
high app karma for a short while.  Current fashionability should be a 
completely separate way to get high app karma (in other words they add 
together).  

I am not saying that just being popular means it always stays on the high 
karma list.  There does need to be a separate index page that lists by 
absolute number of downloads -- new users need to easily find the apps 
that "everyone" has installed because they are amazingly useful, even if they 
haven't been updated in years.  That is separate from the transient "check 
out this new thing" list which we are discussing here.
