In a mailing list, it takes a few seconds to see "what's going on". On forum, you have to click around for a long time (to the extent that you may not bother to do that in the first place if your schedule of tight [read: actual developers may never see it]). Mailing list + "consolidation wiki page" summarizing the current status / viewpoints would be optimal, provided that someone takes responsibility of doing the wiki updates.
