Yes, but this is not what announcements are supposed to be used for.

Announcements are to be used if we need to announce something
cool/critical/important. It should be on the front page instantly and
prominently visible, not after a few votes somewhere near the bottom of
the page?

We can put events in the sidebar? They can be pretty small.
