Unfortunately, your badge doesn't fit with PR1.1 either:

I like the concept. Potential issue with the blue square icon is one
of themeing, since the unbranded package icon is part of the user's
theme.

Short version - the badge is clearer (although perhaps Tim has more
ideas?) but I don't think it works as a full application icon.

The 48px version of Tim's looks reasonable:
