*Some* can be automated (high level, by way of join/exit stats as Dawn mentioned) but you're right, the qualitative stuff requires member input.  Well-designed surveys is the way to go here IMO.  I don't mean the one-off type built into VBulletin either.

Absolutely.  Dashboards are sooo useful for "health" measurements of any kind.
