It only places them in a dir HAM looks in, as for showing the restore dialog at start up it's just a call to hildon-application-manager-util with a parameter.

The fact it's GPL'd without any code is, it can cause them legal issues.

AFAIK there's a .d dir where you can specify an app's dir to be backed up.
