Qt/Qtopia is a good platform as well as Gtk/Gnome is. A strong point for using Gtk for Maemo might be the LGPL: if someone wants to develop a closed source application for maemo, he can do it without having to buy a commercial developers license first. Since Nokia wants to sell the device and not the development toolkit, this could be a good argument for the survival of the platform and the device itself. Sometimes software is just a feature of hardware...
