[maemo-developers] [maemo-developers] Maemo in OpenEmbedded progress

Hello all!

We currently work on full integration of the Nokia 770 and the maemo.org
software into Openembedded.

Current status is that we have the ability to build usable GPE-based filesystems
which run on the 770 without any modification. Everything necessary is in
OpenEmbedded except of one little modification to the sysvinit package which
prevents /sbin/init become a link because this causes the rootfs check of the
770s initrd to fail.

If someone with a 770 is interested, one image is located here:
http://www.home.unix-ag.org/boor/files/gpe-image-nokia770-20050624065259.rootfs.jffs2
It should work on both B3 and B4.

It is a good idea to use Settings->Look&Feel to make the default fonts a little
bit bigger. For some strange reason this applet only starts if it is selected
from menu.
To make USB networking work it is necessary to link /mnt/initfs/lib/modules to
/lib/modules. There is no wireless or bluetooth support so far... some hints how
to make hotplug load the firmware files would be very nice.

The work to build maemo based images is still in progress, but we have most of
the basic packages in now. This includes several packages for the GPE
applications supporting the Hildon user interface (Thanks to Koen for his good
work on these!).
What we currently have is a set of maemo applications like the Navigator,
hildon-home and all its dependencies. The images seem to work fine (environment
setup, sapwood, dbus, X startup and the basic applications) except of some
issues which seem to be related to theming. I wrote a separate message about
these issues to this mailinglist before, but looks like Finland is on holidays. :-)

Here are some screenshots of GPE running on a 770:

I'll provide a screenshot of the broken stuff in the maemo image as soon as the
build process has finished.

Greetings

Florian
