But atleast if one asks colormap from a drawable and then rendrers a pixbuf from pixmap with the colormap in question it works like charm. Have a look at desktop sources for this. True that backround picture is a different case since it is the backround of an X window. So if one fails to use right colormap for backround, setting it from 32 bit image fails.
