Two very good ideas, that would make it fit into the concept of Maemo in a much
better way.

Thats true, it would be good to have some compatibility between these mechanisms
on a PC and mobile devices, but the usecases are that different. For GPE we use
a modified atd to take care about waking up suspended devices and triggering
alerts. The advantage is that it makes use of hardware capabilities (no
polling!) and offers the same capabilities like on a PC. Of course we have a
library which offeres an API to use this feature from applications. Maybe the
same can be done with cron, but i'm still not convinced that this is a good idea.
