In the meantime, the pain of getting getting the production image up and running can be reduced (not eliminated) by scripting your application install list. The Syncing Apple has a post demonstrating (see the comments for how to sudo the app-installer-tool properly): http://www.dillernet.com/apple/2006/01/01/recovering-from-a-firmware-flash/ You'll still need to install xterm and flash to R&D mode manually, but the script can do quite a bit after that.
