Yes, in order to do anything with a USB device working in gadget mode, even those that have a dedicated power supply, a modified USB hub is required. This hub would provide power to both slaves and master. Usually it's a matter of shorting the appropriate lines of a slave port and the master port. And there might be a decoupling capacitor to be removed.
