This is not a limitation of the terminal software, but of the default
kernel config, more accurately the limit of pty's. This can be changed
(until next reboot) with (requires root privs):
echo 64 > /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max

Where 64 can be changed to fit your needs, 4 seems to be the default.
