If nothing else, it shouldn't take anyone 5 minutes to knock up a script
which listens for the connectivity DBUS signals and kicks off the
appropriate scripts.

Personally, I think it's the way for the 770 to go: the subsystem is
different and new (e.g. alarms or connectivity) but the standard UNIX
interface can be maintained (i.e. atd and /etc/network/ifup.d etc.)
