This is the going rumor.  To my knowledge no has has actually done any
work on an alternative input, although there have been a few inquiries.  I
think one hitch is that it is difficult to switch back and forth between
input methods on the device, and since the source isn't available for the
input method used in the end-user rom you can't simply improve or extend
it.
