We try to do this on other platforms for the special keys too, but sometimes you can run into trouble with this. (e.g. some versions of kdrive are missing some key definitions. It might be worth to think about using the higher function keys (>F12) for this purpose. In this case it would be just a matter of shipping an Xmodmap file matching your device.
