When I start maemo there is a symbol with two overlapping windows in
the upper left corner. That I can click to reveal a menu with xterm
and control panel in it. Sorry, but I don't know where an 'extra'
folder would be.

I don't think the installer or package is at fault - I'm just not
correctly set up.
