Yes, this seems exactly equivalent to what others do. For instance,
Ubuntu has additional components, not additional repositories:

For instance:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ edgy universe main restricted
multiverse

I don't see how anything else can possibly work.

But there must be some tools to automatically build packages out there.
I don't believe that Ubuntu or Debian maintainers personally build their
packages for all versions (Ubuntu breezy, dapper, edgy, feisty), and all
architectures (i386, PPC, etc).
