I have other things in that directory, so it appears a better path is...

for the "internal":
cat /sys/devices/platform/mmci-omap.1/mmc0*/cid

for the "external"
cat /sys/devices/platform/mmci-omap.1/mmc1*/cid

I also found that:
cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc0/slot_name
will tell you the "name" of the card (internal or external)
