It is a lot of work to get dm/lvm working to merge two 512MB cards.
2GB cards are really getting cheap. I just noticed this place selling
2GB cards for $18.50 shipped.

Your own time isn't free, I'd just buy a 2GB card instead spending
five or six hours trying to merge two 512MB ones.
