[maemo-developers] [maemo-developers] State of Java on the maemo platform

Hi,
I tried to check the state of java on the maemo platform, because I want
to develop software for the device for my personal use. All information
I found was spreaded around the net, and finally I am not exactly clear
about what the state is.

I already searched quite a lot in this list and googled, added what I
found to the wiki java page, but can't get a final clear picture.

Most important questions are probably:

- is there a fully working Java VM and class lib that can be used to run
stable applications on a 770/800 device?

- Which one(s)?

- are they fully integrated into the GUI framework?

- On which versions of the maemo/IT OS, and whicdh devices are they tested?

- To which Java version can this be considered compatible?

- are there any example applications in end-user quality?

- how can one start developing applications and deploy them on an
770/800 device? (I know how .deb packaging works, but more something
like, which packages are needed on the device to be able to run the
code, against which API does one have to program, any tricks to get
Eclipse set up for this?)

If you (any people developing with java for the maemo and working on
java implementations) would like to give me some answers on these, I'd
happily update the wiki information at
http://maemo.org/maemowiki/JavaLanguage. If some
information is lacking or tests are needed, I will test and find out
myself, and add to the wiki, but some statements of the current state
would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Henning
