I've also noticed this when either tapping the 'X' in the upper right or the scrollbar in Opera. If you look closely at the screen in the right light it's possible to see the plastic touch-sensitive layer bending, and at the edges of the screen it has to bend more before contact is registered. I'm assuming this is just how touchscreens are made, my Nintendo DS and Tapwave Zodiac have similar issues with the very edges of the screen.
