The problem seems to be that you don't have python2.5-dev installed in your device, which is the default configuration. This dev package provides xmlrpc capabilities. To install it open a xterm session in your N800, gain root access (sudo /usr/sbin/gainroot) and install the package (apt-get install python2.5-dev). After this, remember to logout from gainroot typing "exit". We will add these steps to the PyMaemo[1] website as soon as possible.
