I like the idea if two columns but here would me my "view" on it. On mobile phone there are quite complex menu structure. in the begin it's hard to find apps but the longer you use the phone the better you remember how to get to the apps you want(even if it's 4 levels deep (menu 1-1-4). this is because the location of the options is on the same place every time. Therefore I would suggest to copy that functionality onto the menu, and perhaps not even make the menu look like a menu. but more like a dialpad, 6 or 8 items sound good and would leave some space for nice large icon's the last menu option should be "next" initial menu: Media player | file manager | [sub]web Rss reader | [sub]contact | [sub]more after pressing more (perhaps a nice but fast animation like the media streamer) [sub]blaa | [sub]blaaII | [sub]blaaII [sub]extra's | ..... The point is that if items are on the same place every time (the "more" button always on the right bottom) my fingers can rember that.
