Nope, that was just me being dumb: that patch never got merged upstream, as it needs some more work. (It turned into a few-thousand-line monster that changed the API to all video drivers.) Regardless, something's wrong with your Xephyr. I use the one from git both for our internal work, and personally at home, and it works fine.
