The patches do modify the default config. I double checked and usb storage, scsi & scsi block devices are all compiled in to the kernel. Along with a bunch of other usb stuff like hid drivers and all.
Anyhow, even if the drivers for peripheral devices would be missing, I should still see some messages in dmesg about a new usb device connected and also the device data should appear in /sys/bus/usb if host mode would be working fine.
