I think OpenGL ES (http://www.khronos.org/opengles/), a subset of OpenGL
for embedded systems, would be a more viable alternative. As an
experiment, I ported some OpenGL ES software to Maemo a while back:

The performance is what you might expect from a software renderer, but
it's a start.
