You remember that python (with its modules) doesn't come installed by
default. Well the version that comes is python 2.3.

You have the instructions to install in the pymaemo page: 
http://pymaemo.garage.maemo.org/sdk_installation.html

The instructions that come might fail due to a problem with
python2.5-evas-dev, it seems that isn't available for x86:
