I tried with quite regular 44.1kHz stereo 16bit per sample WAVs.
Playback itself is OK as long as nothing else is happening. If I tap on
any UI element that causes some screen updates (like a drop down menu) I
get dropouts of 1/10th of a second up to (felt) 1/2 of a second.

This does not happen with the built-in multi media player which makes me
think that there must be a better way to play this than the above
mentioned gstreamer pipe.

Hmm... pitily it does not :(
Strange... could using ESD instead gstreamer probably help?
My application is not timing critical so that buffering effects from esd
would not be dramatic.
