I just downloaded and unpacked
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/mlivoncic/jpilot770/jpilot_0.99.8_N770_packaging.tar.gz
it contains .o files perhaps. did you try to first do a "make clean"

just out of curiosity where do you run the  dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b -d
command?
