Well, I wasn't sure if this was a poppler thing or something else - thus 
my initial post. I haven't done much PDF rendering with any library, but 
it seemed fairly common for all apps I've seen so far to be fairly 
resource-intensive. However there are other things like version of 
poppler on Maemo (current version in repo is 0.6 vs official latest 
0.10)  that made me wonder and ask questions before I go pigheaded into 
doing something that will be redundant in the nearest future
